Outdoor Setup From Spain
SPEAKER_00Yo, what's up everybody? Welcome back to Hacking Your Health Podcast. This is my first outdoor edition, and I was just saying to Dave, I could get used to this setup. Like, screw the setup at home. Like, this is the setup for me. Um it is Tuesday morning, and we are gonna put this out on Tuesday. So I know that we jest sometimes about uh it being as close to live as possible and we do it on Monday, but we are definitely cutting it to the wire thanks to Dave's United Airline drama yesterday.
DaveSo so yeah, yeah, definitely. But first of all, it looks amazing over there, by the way. So how first of all, how's Spain? Spain is and your way, your sound and audio looks phenomenal. It looks really good.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'll explain my setup here because I knew this was going to happen. So I have my DJI mic brought in so that it's plugged into my laptop, and I have my phone connected. Um so I think this this could be the the portable setup so that we don't have the excuse you can get the same things, so we don't have the excuse to ever miss one again. We can just do it wherever we are.
DaveYeah. And I and I will say this is definitely the the closest we've got it to doing a video for sure. I even I even brought I don't know if you can see it.
SPEAKER_00You can see it, the Starlink, because I knew the Wi-Fi wouldn't be optimized.
DaveAh, you have Starlink there?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna be able to do it.
DaveYou've gotten it. I'm I am ready. Stop the special happen with you, man. Let me tell you.
SPEAKER_00Hanging around hackers. Yeah, yeah, right? That's awesome. Don't have an excuse. We can get it, we can get it done no matter where we're at in the world. So how is Spain? How is Pain? Spain is ideal. It's very chill. Uh the days seem to be short. I'm enjoying the sun. I find a really cool gym, and I know that we jested about me moving, but this could be second on the list to Ohio.
DaveYeah, all right, second on the list. I got it. So you're gonna have a house in Ohio, house in Spain, and then you just kind of go back and forth, right? That sounds ideal. Yeah. I've never been to Spain, so I I I definitely want to check it out sometime soon.
SPEAKER_00Well, when I get my house in Spain, you can come over. What about that?
DaveSounds good. Sounds good. Sounds good. Yeah, my uh my vacation was was absolutely amazing until the last day. So it was uh I woke up in the morning and uh you know, I look at my text messages and it says, United, we've completely canceled your flight. You're you're no longer flying out this morning. And then I reread it again, it said, Oh, we rebooked your flight, and it was the same as it was.
SPEAKER_00It started with good news, which is hilarious.
DaveWell, no, no. So so first it was we've canceled your flight. Okay, then it was good news, we rebooked your flight, and I looked at the time, and it was the exact same time of when I was supposed to be leaving in the morning anyway. I'm like, oh, it must have fixed it. They must have put the you know flight back on or everything. So you know, I go in, I take a shower, everything's great. And I just happened to look at my text message again, and it says, We've booked you for the next day. And I'm like, oh, great. So instead of me flying out today, I fly out tomorrow. Uh, this isn't gonna work. I literally have back-to-back meetings, like starting like this is my first meeting of
United Airlines Travel Chaos
Daveabout 20 throughout the entire day. There is not even time for me to pee today uh until five o'clock. So I'm not eating, I'm not peeing, there's there's nothing happening today. It's just gonna be back-to back meetings, which is so stupid. I I hate it. It's the worst days ever. Um, but regardless, uh, so you know, United's like, well, we have this flight. If you drive to Tampa, we can, you know, which is three hours away, um, you know, we can get you into Columbus at one o'clock in the morning, uh, you know, uh in Columbus, and then I'd have to drive two hours from Columbus to Cleveland. And I'm like, dude, this this isn't. I'm like, so I just started looking around and I finally found um a flight out of Tampa Um that uh was an American Airlines flight that got me through from Tampa to Charlotte, Charlotte to Cleveland. So we got home about 9 30 last night, um, which is a lot better than 1 a.m. uh when we were supposed to get home at you know 11 uh in the morning. So uh yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was it was uh it was our plan our plan was to do it yesterday.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Whenever you get home, you said like 1 p.m. But I mean shout out to uh United Airlines for fucking that up for us.
DaveDude, how do you just like cancel a flight though? Like just like randomly just like, hey, now you're good. Like we're good. Sorry, and and you're flying the next day. Like, I don't know, man. It was it was it was crummy. But the vacation was great. We did a ton of stuff. We went to like Universal Epic, and I rode all the rides there, all the roller coasters and all that good stuff. Um then we did uh this one place called Discovery Cove, which was really cool. And you like you have this like hat that goes on you underwater, it's like a scuba hat, but you don't have to have like a normal tank or anything like that. The the tank's all the way up in the thing, and you just walk around the bottom, and there was like you know, sharks and you know, rays and things like that. So it was cool. Uh good times. The kids had a good time. I got my lifts in while I was there, which you know um Mason did as well. So I actually woke up this morning. I'm like, ah, my biceps. Like, what happened? My biceps. I have like T Rex arms right now. Um I hit I hit the gym pretty hard when I went to we went to this. There's a really cool spot uh in Cocoa Beach. It's called like Health and Fitness. It's like just a generic name, but it's an amazing gym. Uh has like everything you could possibly want. Uh so we spent like an hour and a half there just like playing around with different machines and stuff that I'd never seen before. So it was a good time.
SPEAKER_00Nice, cool. Yeah, the gym I find. Um so I've been this is my second time in two weeks in Spain, so I was out for the weekend to help Ali the barbecue. Then I flew home for a day and then I flew back. Um did you really? What are you doing? Well, I so Ali Ali Ali bought a house out here and he needed someone to help him come and buy a barbecue, which is a perfect excuse to go to Spain for the weekend. So I came out for the weekend, helped them buy a barbecue, but then I had booked for Harper and I to come out for vacation for 10 days. So I flew home for a day, flew back with her, but whenever I was over the first time with uh with Ali, we found this gym uh limitless, it's called, and I got like a a month past. But it reminds me of my gym at home because it's dark, it's got pink neon lights, loads of cool equipment. So I've been there every day. It's been absolutely ideal, ideal setup out here. So the uh the the gym tour of the globe continues. I and so I still like I still enjoy going to other gyms and seeing what they have going on.
DaveYeah, absolutely. Well, except the one gym, and this is this is this is gonna be a little bit of an uh today's discussion on getting more with less. So, you know, I used to be I used to be kind of a gym snob, I'm not gonna lie. Like, you know, I mean I'd have to go like what I'd used to do is is plan, you know, uh a hotel near a gym. So
Great Vacations And Gym Hunting
DaveI'd actually look geographically of like the gym that I wanted to go to when I'm traveling, and then I'll try to find a hotel that's close to that gym. So it's easy for me to get in and out, you know, either walking distance or like a five-minute Uber or something like that. And so uh we we uh we uh we flew into Tampa first for two days, then we went to Cocoa Beach for the rest of the week. And uh Tampa, you know, I booked uh a place that was close to this convention center where my kids wanted to see a stupid concert, and we ended up going to the casino and I end up winning by by the way, I was gonna say, like, I ended up winning like $5,000 at the casino. I started off at $500, and I I never win ever, ever. Like I always lose money, and I hate gambling. It's like the worst thing ever. But man, this one guy, this one guy that comes up next to me and he's totally tanked, and he's never played crabs before, and he's the next guy in line to roll the dice. And uh I'm like, dude, okay, this is what you do here. Put your money here, put your money here. And the dude just goes on like a two-hour streak, like, just completely destroys the whole table. I mean, like, I went I made so much money off of that guy. I was like hugging him. I'm like, I want to be your best friend. Like, it was great, it was great, it was a great time. But but the the gym that we stayed at in Tampa, literally, it was just um 50-pound dumbbells with a max, and it was just a bench. And at least it was a rotating bench, you know, where you could at least get inclines in and things like that. But I'll tell you, I had a great workout with 50-pound dumbbells. Like, I was able to do everything, you know, that I wanted to do, uh, and still destroy my muscles. It just took a lot more reps. And I think, you know, my my my purpose of discussing today's topic is really around, you know, you see all of these different uh movements that you can do and exercises you can do, and you know, fitness influencers that are showing you like how to do things upside down, you know, with your leg cocked sideways. And at the end of the day, your, you know, and this is Dr. Mike said it the best, he's like, your muscle doesn't get confused. It you can't confuse your muscle with muscle confusion, like doing different exercises on those same muscles do absolutely nothing. You could literally do the exact same bicep curls and hammer curls all the time and grow bicep muscles, right? You don't need to, you know, do a stretch position bicep muscle. You don't have to go on a bicep muscle machine. You know, literally leg extensions can grow you the most amazing quads you've ever had in your entire life. You don't need hack squats, you don't need squats, you don't need anything else. So it just depends on what your goals are. And you know, I'm I'm obviously saying this as I have blown out my gym downstairs with literally every piece of equipment possible known to man. But and I was I actually just saw this uh Sornex uh new new equipment I might I might get. Um it's like this full body push-pull thing that like all the power lifters use. It's like a you know push-pull, you know, and it's just it's just yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I saw I saw the um I can't remember the name of the guy that tagged in the I tagged you in the guy's post the other day about the the concept to you rhino thing. That it's the gym, the guardian's gym guy. I saw that one of the uh power lifters using it. Yes, yeah.
DaveYeah, it looks really it looks really awesome. So I was like looking at something like that potentially, but you know, like literally, but I mean it's just it just makes it easier to work out a bunch of muscles at the same time, and that's all you're trying to do when you're working out is just get in there, lift the weights. I um I did uh pool session with Mace uh when was that? Uh Sunday. Sunday? Yeah, it was Sunday. So it's funny. Um we took we to uh we started, you know, we all our our like our our tradition is every time we go on a on a trip at night we watch like old like 90s movies so the kids can get accustomed to 90s movies and like them and everything else. And so we watched uh 21st Jump Street, and our big plan was to watch American Pie. And uh we got like five minutes into American Pie and turned it off. We're like, no, no, no, this is not happening. This is not happening. The whole pie scene, you know, or the stock scene and you know the kid gets caught, you know, whatever. I'm like, no, no, no, we're we're switching this out. But we uh ended up watching Jackass 1, and uh the kids thought it was like the funniest thing ever. So we went through like a and Aaron doesn't like Jackass that much, but but I definitely do. And um, we went through all the Jackass movies, and we ended up going to the movie theater Sunday night to go watch the new Jackass movie, the final one that they made, um, which was okay. It was it was again, you know, like nothing really beats Jackass one, in my opinion. Um, there's a couple scenes, you know, and throughout the other ones that are really good, but like one was just consistently like I need to leave and and just because I'm laughing so hard. But um we get through we get through all the jackasses, but we go to the gym, and you know, I I I probably did the most intense back and bicep workout that I've ever done. And and and I didn't really use any different equipment. I was just you know in a mood that I was just like, hey, I'm just gonna kill myself and just keep going, uh, just to try different equipment and be in this gym. And that's one thing I I do kind of miss. I think when you're in a gym where it's public, you push yourself harder than when you're in a gym and you're just by yourself and you're kind of going through the motions and you're distracted. But literally, you know, every piece of equipment available versus not having every quick uh piece of equipment available, still the same workout, still just the sore the next day. I did push that day uh and woke up the next morning and my chest was was was sore as hell, my shoulders were sore as hell with 50 pound dumbbells, right? And so I think you know, we uh we get caught up in like, hey, we need all of this equipment when you know, and and and I just got asked for one of my buddies um at the office, like, hey, I'm looking at building this this amazing gym and everything. And uh it was funny because he said, you know, I'm not interested in the tonal because he knows I recommend the tonal often. But like the tonal is like a perfect machine for full body everything. Like you literally just get the tonal and that's all you really need. Like, or or you get a set of dumbbells and a bench, that's all you really need, or a rack, that's all you need. Like, like you don't need all the sophisticated equipment to build muscle, it's just putting your muscle under tension. It's just keep going until the muscles blow out, and then you start to get a little bit better, you know, each time with that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure. It's it's funny you said the the mood you're in, one of my workouts uh last week was sponsored by the other guy that was in the gym, and I basically just went around doing what he was doing, but doing slightly more wit wit and slightly more lips. I was like, this is a great great way to work out. Um, but no, I absolutely agree, and I think we it I guess it comes right back to the conversation of like over optimizing everything. Do you know what I mean? Like people need the perfect setup for this, and well, I can't get my full workout in, so I'm not just gonna do anything at all. And like I have a couple of clients at a minute that are uh camping, whether it's uh in an RV or they're on a camping trip or whatever it's like, just bring a set of resistance bands. Okay, it's not gonna be perfect, it's not gonna be the same stimulus that you're putting on your body. But for me, whenever it comes to travel or you know, whether it's conference or vacation or whatever, like it's just about maintaining the habit more than anything else. Yes, you can still get a workout in. Sometimes you can get a great workout in, depending on on what's available, but it's understanding that whenever these times come, it's like not just completely sacking it off because you don't have this exact hack squat and that's what's in your plan. It's like you can do some sort of squatting movement or insert whatever the thing is, and like you said, still get a decent workout in. And the goal is to create stimulus on the muscle. It's not like I said, your muscle's not gonna go, ah, well, you know, this isn't the knotless pro version to Eagle 350 leg extension. So, you know what, we're not gonna grow any muscle for that. That's the only thing that grows muscle on your legs.
DaveYeah, it's it's it's it's and and by the way, this is
Getting More With Less Training
Davethis is a evolution for me because you know, I went through this whole situation when I was looking at, you know, Nippard and all of those guys, and you know, just looking at like, hey, how do I build more muscle faster? And the truth of the matter is, is like, you know, you can leverage these data studies that are very controlled and you know are in a specific environment. These are usually highly skilled, professional, trained athletes that can't grow additional muscle, by the way, um, you know, or or need, you know, very little gain have very little gains in the muscles because they're so big in the first place, versus like somebody like me that, you know, like I'm you know, I'm good where I'm at. I still want to grow more. You know, I always want to grow and get bigger, but you know, I'm never gonna be a power lifter or a bodybuilder uh in any way, shape, or form. And my age, uh also the steroids aspect of it, you know, I'm good on just testosterone, I'm I'm happy there. Um, and so when you look at like what my goals are, it's literally just the pusher muscle to where it can't go anymore. And from there you see the results, right? And you know, I was like, Mason was funny because uh Mason's uh been lifting. Uh we have a uh Dom that our you know that works at Trusted Texas, also uh Mason's personal trainer, and he's Dom's got Mason on common calories. And he said to me the other day, he's like, Dad, I didn't I didn't know how many calories I was eating. My gosh. And I'm like, Yeah, right. And he's like, Why is this so much fat and so much calories? I'm like, well, you have to look at like what's in it, right? You have you know your sauces, you have this and that, and the butter and this. He's like, I didn't even, I never knew that. I just thought, like, looked at it was like, you know, meat and you know, whatever. And I just didn't think about the rest of the calories in there. I'm like, yeah, exactly. And then, you know, we went to this ice cream store and he's like, nah, nah, I'm not gonna do ice cream, I'm gonna count calories. And then we get to the candy store and the guy's like, hey, I'm gonna get this bag of candy. I'm like, dude, there's like 900 calories in that bag right there alone. Like, you know, you're blowing through all your calories, right? And you can't eat anything for the rest of the day, basically. He's like, All right, I'm just gonna have like three pieces, and then I'll just like space the motor time. I'm like, there you go. You know, it's moderation, it's moderation in everything you do. Like, you know, I it's funny because we um we went to this Mexican place and I got this huge bowl, but it was like all meat. By the way, Mexican food is like the best food that has ever been created in life. Like, I honestly believe like if if if I could only eat one type of food for the rest of my life, it could be Mexican for sure. Um I just love all Mexican food. But uh, and and you know, there's not like the Mexic the Mexican folks have figured it out. Like they they have figured out the food thing. One, food comes out really fast. Like you can order anything on the meal and it's out in five minutes. Like, no matter what, if you're like the fanciest Mexican restaurant, it comes out in five minutes, you know, to the you know, hole in the wall, you know, pub beer, you know, place that is a Mexican place, five minutes. Like it's five minutes standard. Like, and I don't know how they make it that delicious in five minutes, but it works. And and I got this big tub, it was like this called the Moja Cacti or something like that. It was like a big cactus, you know, bowl. And it was just like meat and everything like that. And you know, like what I've really realized is like I just don't look to finish that meal off. I look to feel like when I'm full and just stop and I'm done. And then, you know, if I want to have ice cream or something, and I really didn't, I didn't eat ice cream the entire time I was there. Um I had some there was this candy store that it was like this retro candy place, and they had all the candy from like the 90s. Like, remember those uh those I don't know if you had them in in Ireland, but they're like these these wax like drinks that you you basically like peel them off and inside is like liquid. It's basically like a it's basically like a um like a you know one of those freezer uh what are they called? Uh I don't know I'm I'm losing the name for it right now, but it's like it's like a popsicle. It was like a it's like a popsicle, but it's not frozen, and it just has like wax around it, which is completely useless. You don't eat the wax. And so you just open up and you drink a little tiny bit of it. But I had to get one of those. There was like the unbreakable jawbreaker that's like this big, you know, like like all the old 90s retro candy. And so I went in there and got this huge bag. I ate like three of them. Like it's still the bag's still sitting over there right now, and it'll probably take me like six years to get through it, but it was worth it by getting those. But what I've realized like on my weight journey is that everything is in moderation for me. It's it's literally just, you know, if I go and have pizza, I'm not eating a full pizza. I'm eating like two or three slices of pizza and I'm good, right? And it's taken a long time to program the brain for it. But um, I was talking to a buddy of mine recently, and uh I, you know, I saw him uh and and we haven't seen him in in forever. They came over uh for 4th of July. We had this really nice place on the beach, it was beautiful, just like real majestic, you know, like literally walk out to the beach, you're right there. This house was was incredible. And um, and I was talking to Paul, and he was uh I hadn't seen him in probably, man, probably it's probably been six or seven years. He used to be our neighbor here in Ohio and he moved to Florida. And so he came down, uh, you know, he was by the Orlando area, which is about an hour drive or so. And uh I saw him and I'm like, dude, like you look great. Like he was, you know, he was at his probably his heaviest, like 270, 280, and he was probably like my weight, like 215, and he's just as big and tall as me. And I'm like, dude, you look great. Like, what did you do? He's like, well, actually, he's like, you know, I just I just decided, you know, like I was going to eat in moderation. And he's like, the doctors helped me out though. They they started me off on a GLP one agonist, so he was on terzepatide. He's like, but I only did that for three months just to curb and get the habits put in place, so using it as a tool properly, you know, uh to get his his his food habits under control. And then from there he stopped taking terzepatide after three months and was able to lose all the weight in continuous with it, right? And I think that's an incredible feat because you know, he figured it out without you know, uh, you know, doing a lot of research. He, you know, he had a doctor that was kind of helping him on the side, but he took control of his own life by eating, you know, moderately. And when we were there, you know, I made a bunch of hamburgers and hot dogs and all the spread, you know, for for the Fourth of July party. He had a lot of alcohol there, you know, had he had two beers, you know, ate one hot dog and one hamburger, and that was it. He was done. Didn't have any sides. Like he's figured out a way to control his body. And I think, you know, the lesson on the lighter weights, uh, you know, and the lesson on like what you eat, it's all just doing the right things consistently over and over and over again to get the right results. And I think today's society, I just saw a study recently that um a Generation Z, so I think I think it's Generation Z, it's not X. Generation Z uh is the first uh uh generation that is not as smart as the previous generation, not as smart or smarter than the previous generation. Meaning if you if you look at you know their writing skills, their comprehension skills, their retention skills, like it's way worse than our our generation and and prior generations. And we've had this like upward spiral of every generation, you know, dating back to the 1900s, the next generation has been substantially smarter than the previous generation. Like we've gotten more knowledge, we've learned more, we we learn how to teach kids more. And what they've shown is is that because we've introduced technology uh into the classrooms, we don't learn as effective um with that versus human or in-person um type situations, right? And so, you know, this next generation, they're looking for immediate gratification. And I see with my kids too, by the way, like, you know, you know, they don't understand delayed rewards, you know, building up and doing something to get rewards later on. It's all that immediate gratification. And I think that's where a lot of people today on the wait side struggle is they don't see the immediate gratification of putting in the work and staying consistent. And so they do these cheat diets or things like that, or these cleanses or whatever, and they may have some immediate results, but they spike right back or even worse because it's not something they can be consistent with. And you know, I think our message here has always been, you know, do things moderately, make small changes over time that are consistent that change your life for the rest of your life, right? You can't get a small shortcut that does something. And so, you know, if I'm gonna go to the gym, you know, and and you know, I was in the middle of of Tampa and there wasn't a great gym anywhere near me. Well, I'm gonna go work out in this, you know, 50-pound dumbbell thing, and I'm still gonna get my workout in because that's my routine, that's my habit, that's my thing. And and and is it gonna be as good of a workout? Or it ended up being just as good of a workout, but my my stipulation in my head was it's not gonna be just a good workout, but I'm gonna
Food Moderation And Sustainable Habits
Davedo it anyway, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think the I guess to touch on that, and I know that I had this conversation without you last week, but I think that the you know let's talk about specifically your relationship with food. Do you mean like you're talking about being able to have a couple of slices of pizza and being able to have ice cream and being able to have three of the candies and whatever? It wasn't always that way. Do you mean like if you think back to whenever we first started, it was like you wouldn't have had any of those things. And I think that the you know, do you know my you know how obsessive I was?
DaveI mean, remember I I still remember that that text message I sent you. It was probably like 4 a.m. your time or 3 a.m. your time. And it was like this guilty text message. I was over a buddy's poker place, and it was the first time I'd actually like cheating. I'd been like, oh, I've been like super. Good for like a year and a half. Like, I did not, I was so rigid with my calories and how I would eat things and everything. And I texted you at like four o'clock in the morning. I'm like, dude, I was over here and I had like four pieces of pizza. I feel like shit. I like my whole I'm I just lost a year and a half worth of work because I had four pieces of pizza. Like, I'm just I need some help here because I'm going through the shit right now. So it ended up not having it, obviously. I didn't gain all my weight back and my habits didn't stop, you know, by eating four pieces of pizza. But it's that moderation aspect, I think, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I think that that that was that was my point. It was like if I think about you specifically in that instance, it was like you were so on it for such a long period of time that whenever that time came, it wasn't the case of that you fucked everything up, but it was like you had earned the the right to introduce balance, but you hadn't realized that that's the stage that you had gotten to. So for me, like I'm never gonna tell anybody they can't have something. I do favor like challenging yourself a little bit more to really embed the habit so that you see the result. And I think that that's where people fall short, is they try and do too moderate too much moderation too quickly, so they don't necessarily get the result that they could if they were a little bit more strict, and when they don't get the result that they could, they get frustrated because they want results faster, and then they think that they don't work, they think that the thing doesn't work, and then they either stop or they switch to the other thing. Whereas if they just set aside a period of time, whether it's three months, six months a year, whatever it is, where they're like, look, I'm just gonna be like 100% on it and fully commit to this and actually do the hard thing because if I do it in this time period, I'll get the result, I'll get to a place that I can have a little bit more freedom around the stuff that I eat, and I will earn the right to have balance. The other other side of it is sometimes you get to that point and you don't necessarily even want the things because you then have this different relationship with food of like, okay, if I eat this specific way and I have done for the past six months, I feel good on the food that I eat. If I start to eat junk food or you know, non-nutrient dense food or what's themed as quote bad food, you feel a certain way, you feel like shit. Like you have almost like a food hangover if you have like a really dodgy you know burger or like pizza or whatever. So you like you almost get to the point where you earn the right of balance, but you don't necessarily want it because you know what the feeling of that food, the impact it's gonna have.
DaveYeah, and by the way, kudos uh to you on last week's podcast, because obviously one of my friends uh that I mentioned last podcast, but uh reached out and said it was one of the best podcasts he'd he'd listened to, and he was beating himself up because he just had like a you know crap eating day or whatever, and uh, you know, and and that's what this is all about, right? Like this journey doesn't mean that you can't go out and just have a great day where you just pound a bunch of beers and eat a ton of pizza, you know. I mean, honestly, sometimes that's good for you to to whack your body a little bit off, you know, on the calories and and reset. Um, it's just that consistency piece. If you're the next day, you're right back at it. It literally meant nothing. It it meant nothing to your body. You didn't gain all that weight back, you're not going back to your original habits because you went back on the train again to do the exact same thing. And it's those habits that you you form over time that you can easily, by the way, break. You gotta be really careful of being being you know, being consistent with those those changes that you've made. But at the same time, like, you know, I was at I was on the beach, and it was funny because my my kids, um, they they they're like uh Mason came up to me. He's like, Dad, he's like, I've been looking at every dude here. I'm like, wait, well, wait a minute. All right, wait a minute. What are you talking about? He's like, no, no, not like that, not like that. I'm like, all right, all right. He's like, but you are literally the biggest guy out of this entire theme park here. He's like, I haven't seen one person that is bigger than you. I'm like, Yeah, thanks, man. Like, I've by the way, I noticed that too, by the way. Just so you know, I was checking out every guy too. There wasn't, you know, like and it was funny because when when Mason and I went to the gym, there was this dude that was, I mean, he was probably like 55, you know, years old. And the guy was just just jacked. I mean, like, the guy was was was three times the size of me. And the guy looked like he was probably like a pro bodybuilder type of guy. And Mason looked at me, he's like, he's he's got you, man. I'm like, yeah, yeah, he's he's got me for sure. Yeah, there's no question. I'm like, that guy looks good. I'm like, that's what I want to look at when I'm 55. But you know, I'm like, uh, you know, it's it's funny because like, you know, the kids recognize it, they try to stay healthy. Um, you know, I I'm very fortunate, you know, I don't have you know any overweight kids that are struggling with obesity or health issues or things like that. You know, my wife is in a healthy uh healthy as well, you know, she goes out and works out all the time, is in great shape. You know, it's it's it's infectious in your entire you know ecosystem of what your tribe is. And um, so those those those discipline pieces, they help motivate me because they see how how strong dad is. You know, dad always is the one carrying in the luggage, you know, from you know the heavy ass luggage or loading the luggage back up or getting everybody to point A to point B, you know, always taking care of, you know, opening up, you know, ketchup bottles that they can't open up. You know, it's like I'm the de facto strong person, which I appreciate that, you know. But I was walking on the beach and I had my shirt off, you know, it's funny because uh Mason and I went to go get a spray tan. And uh Aaron and Morgan have been like tanning in our backyard for like the past month so that they could have a nice tan when they go to Florida or whatever. And uh our tans beat them out, so they were super pissed it up. Um, because we went and got this just cheesy ass spray tan, you know. But but uh you know, it was nice having a tan. You know, uh I'm at 214 right now, which is a great weight for me. Um still staying in the 214, 215 range. Uh when got on the scale this morning, and and I was like, I wonder, you know, like hey, you know, you're out uh, you know, eating and drinking and whatever. I wonder how much weight I gained. 214 still, you know, it's perfect. So I was able to balance my food intake and working out and you know, plus all of the steps that I got in with all these different theme parks, right? So I was definitely burning calories, but you know, it was great to be able to go onto the beach, you know, and take my shirt off and feel great about that. Like it's it's it's the weirdest feeling. Like I've it's a relatively new feeling for me over the past couple of years because I've never been able to take my shirt off and not be embarrassed, you know, about where where my physique is. Just the confidence that it instills in you when you're the fittest guy around and uh no one can come close to touching you, it's like you you feel like the alpha male. I don't know what it is, but you know, like it's just it's just a great feeling. You have that confidence in yourself, which then leads over to your life, your personal life, you know, your family, your work, everything else. It's just a great feeling.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree. And I think the like whenever I was here the first time with Ali, we were you know sorting some stuff out at his place. And uh I have my shirt off. And there was a couple of times he came in, he's like, This is like you know, you look good, like this is the best shape that you've ever been in. And uh, there's a part of me like, yes, I appreciate the recognition, but also like that's the point. Like the point is to continue to be in better shape. I wouldn't want to be in worse shape, like I wouldn't be like, uh, you know what, you're not as you know, big or lean as you were before. And truthfully, like for the past year, I think pretty much buying on a year, I think uh last June I went to a Beta for Mads event, and I've sort of stayed in the same sort of condition for the entire year, and it's the it's the first time I think ever, and I've mentioned this a couple of times, where I haven't had that urge to like, I want to be bigger, I want to be leaner. Like I'm I'm I still want to make progress. But if I stayed like this forever in terms of like strength, muscle mass, and overall condition, I would be happy. Like I'm in a place now, it has taken me twelve and a half, twelve and a half years to get here, but I'm in a place that I'm happy with, how I maintain things, the the life I'm able to live, being able to go out and enjoy food and whatever else, but also get my training in like I'm happy with this and to go to the gym and and feel good. Like it's the I think that the confidence comes from the knowledge of the work that you have put in. Um and that's that reflects, like you said, okay, yes, in that one instance in the beach, but to literally everything else that you do in your life.
DaveYeah.
One Shot Fixes And Longevity
DaveSo switching topics, I have a cool medical one. Um, and this this goes to show you like where we're heading on the medical field. I mean, I honestly do feel like in the next 10 to 15 years, we will cure cancer, we will cure longevity and death. Like we're getting so close to being able to literally cure almost any ailment. I mean, there was um there was a new study that came out, and this is not the one I'm talking about, but there's a new study that came out where they were able to reverse age-related brain degradation, i.e., like, you know, like uh memory loss, things like that, uh, your brain degrading over time. And it was done through controlling the gut microbiome. So it was, you know, uh basically repairing the gut biome, you know, the good bacteria, everything else in your in your gut, and was able to actually reverse memory loss and things like that, which is crazy, right? Like, you know, they're finding out like our our stomach is literally probably one of the most important parts of our body or organs in our body that controls literally virtually every aspect around our liver health, our kidney health, our brain health. Almost everything centralizes to our gut. So it's not actually like the brain or all these other areas, it's your stomach, right? And which goes to show you like if you're just eating total shit in microprocessed foods, ultra-processed foods and plastics, it's disrupting our gut, which then causes all of these other ailments. So if we can fix our stomach, we can literally fix the majority of problems that we have in our bodies. But what I found with this one just kind of blew my mind. Um, there's a new one-time shot, okay? So you you get the shot one time. And if you look at all-cause mortality, like well, your your leading indicators of how long you're gonna live. We talked about this before on the podcast, right? Your first is gonna be your heart health, right? So, so you know, are you gonna die of heart attack or cholesterol or you know, like you know, all these these pockets forming in your heart that cause blockages and things like that? All typically comes down to cholesterol, right? And imbalance of cholesterol. And it's not that cholesterol is bad, it's just the buildup of that over time wears on your organs in your body. So there's a shot that came out from from EI Lilly, and it specifically targets so what what they what they did in research, which I found really fascinating, is there's there's a specific like uh enzyme or chemical that your body releases in your body. It's called the PCS K9, and it's out of your liver. And it's a regulator of cholesterol uh in your body. Okay, so it helps regulate your cholesterol levels. Well, what they found was there's certain folks that have um this this gene. So in your DNA, um, there's a there's a certain subset of people that PCS uh K9 is turned off, meaning they don't produce this enzyme to regulate cholesterol. And for some reason, people with with that flag turned off, that gene feature turned off, don't have any heart issues. They live longer, and their cause, their all-cause mortality for heart defects is literally non-existent. And so they're like, well, if we can turn this off, maybe it can help people that have you know bad hearts or cholesterol or or or issues. And what they found was so this is uh going into the third year of clinical trials, um, by so they use um uh what's called CRISPR, uh, which is a way of editing your your DNA, uh, so modifying your genetics basically, and they turn this one flag off in your liver. So it's one shot. Okay, so it's not like you're taking a pill every week or you have to get a shot every year or every quarter or whatever. It's one shot. And what they found was at least up to three years, it completely fixes all cardiovascular health issues and cholesterol in your body by shutting off this flag by one shot. So literally, people that are struggling with cholesterol have struggled with cholesterol their entire life, get one shot that will fix them for the rest of your life and not have to worry about cholesterol. Isn't that insane? Absolutely. And so this is this literally could be the cure for the majority of which is the number one killer, by the way, is heart attacks, could be the number one fix, you know, for for fixing all, you know, all of your cardiovascular health issues going forward in your life. So, you know, it's it's amazing where we're going with all of these different you know drugs. Like you look at you know, RETA, uh retruitride that's coming out, right? You know, retruitride um retools your glycogen uh so that you're you're focusing more on muscle mass and keeping bone density and muscle mass, but also burns an additional 500 calories. Also happens because you're retooling glycogen, you know, have lower uh have insulin sensitivity, which is great for you, right? You don't want insulin insensitivity. It also fixes your liver. It's like, you know, one shot that fixes your liver, fixes your your your insulin, uh, you know, uh ensures consistent weight loss and also controls you know your muscle mass and bone density. Like we're getting to the point to where I honestly believe like in 10 years, you're gonna be able to take a shot that puts you in perfect perfect health. You know, like like literally, you know, balances all your stuff. You have muscle mass, you don't even have to go to the gym and work, you know, lift weights. It's telling your muscles that you went under stress. Now, I don't know if that's a good thing. I think you know, going out and getting, you know, lifting weights and having that that time at the gym and going through something and doing something for yourself is an amazing mental health thing. But it might not be required to go to the gym in the next 10 years or so, which I think is is absolutely crazy.
SPEAKER_00I think it's it's cool to see like I guess it's just problem solving on a different scale. But I think like coming back to what you're saying, like not necessarily just using the gym for the muscle development, but everything else that comes along with it. But I do agree, like it's cool to sort of see the solving of all of these problems of like, okay, right, well, people aren't going to die at this age, or you know we can extend life expectancy or whatever it might be. Like, it's insane to think just what is possible and you know on how quickly it's advancing and like how quickly these new things are coming out.
DaveYeah, and so I I've mentioned him before in the past, but uh Dr. David Sinclair out of Stanford, his his company plans to test whole body rejuvenation drugs. Uh and it's called the X Prize uh competition. And so this is the first human clinical trials that are for reversing age. So it's actually taking you know you from 55 to 35 or 25, however, how whatever age you want to be, they literally have a drug that is in the experimental you know phases right now. Works in mice, works great in mice, no side effects, nothing like that, literally reverses your age. And we're going through the first human clinical trials now to do that. And so it's like one of those things that like uh people like look at me when you know, because they're not watching the data studies and what's happening, they're like, You're crazy. That's not that's not gonna happen. And I look at the data studies and I'm like, man, I I I see it, it's happening. And I even talked to a doctor, uh, and I won't mention what clinic he works for, but it's a one of the largest hospitals in the world. And um, you know, he he heads up, he's the head of all the practices, you know, the quantum computing areas and things like that. And I asked him, I'm like, dude, do you think they're gonna cure cancer in the next 10 years? He's like, No, I don't. He's like, I don't think they're even close to it. And then, but then you look at all the medical studies and what they're doing, and like they're able to reverse, you know, like they there's a new one out that um was able to reduce all chances of uh pancreatic cancer. And for those that have pancreatic cancer, it gives them like a 40% bump in survivability rate. Again, still in clinical trials. But I'm like, how do you how do you not know that? Like personally, like like we're you know, you look at the medical studies that are coming out, and there's so many advancements that are happening, especially with what's going on with AI. You know, you look at AI, and that's where I think he's missing the bridge, is AI is exponentially moving. And the, you know, you you give AI, you know, you train AI really well in medical studies and you know, all the data around historic things that have been done in this field to try to cure cancer, and it's gonna it's gonna figure it out. It's it absolutely is gonna figure it out. Like I have no question in my mind that cancer is gonna be something that when you look at our my kids, right, for example, they're not gonna have to deal with cancer. You know, like I don't know if it's gonna be in my time frame, but I know my kids are not gonna have to deal with cancer. And even just the the the gallery test that I took a few weeks ago, that test for over 50 different um cancers just from a simple blood test. Like, that is revolutionary, right? And thank God it came back clean, you know. You're like, you're good. I'm like, thank God, you know, I'm still gonna go get my colonoscopy done because uh that's that's important. I don't that you know that's the number one killer for men. Um so you know, colon cancer is probably one of the ones that I still want to test test for, not rely on specifically of the blood test, but you know, like and what that will, you know, what the gallery limitation is is it will only look for existing cancer that is, you know, replicating and it's in your bloodstream and things like that. So early signs of cancer, it's not gonna necessarily detect, right? So if I have collops or things like that that are forming that are eventually gonna turn into cancer, you know, it's not gonna detect those types of things. But you know, we're in a time of of human technology where you know, we will probably solve the energy crisis, right? You know, like we will figure out clean energy, we will figure out ways of of doing things so differently, uh, understanding quantum physics. Like this stuff is all gonna happen in our lifetime, which is insane to think about. Like how fast we're moving from a technological and innovation perspective. Like, I would have never seen this 10 years ago. Like it is just incredible, incredible.
SPEAKER_00I think the the biggest thing is looking at um in the nicest way possible, all the ways that mankind have fucked everything up. Now mankind is trying to fix everything, essentially. Yeah.
DaveWell, I love how we we fucked everything up by introducing ultra-processed foods and plastics everywhere and polluting our earth. And so what we're gonna do is we're gonna figure out ways of getting rid of that pollution, you know, more simpler, and you know, shots that can correct ultra-processed foods, instead of just like saying, hey, no more ultra-processed foods or plastics, which would fix everything, by the way. You know, you get rid of ultra-processed foods and my and all and plastics, it fixed everything. But instead of getting rid of that industry, those industries, we're gonna get a shot that fixes that, right?
SPEAKER_00We're gonna create a new industry to fix that problem, to fix that problem.
DaveYeah. And so like what's gonna happen after that? So we're gonna laugh of all the shots, and then what are we gonna, what industry is gonna come in and fix all the shots that we're getting to correct all the problems we had from that, right? It's like, you know, it's just that we're continuously evolving ways of it, it's it's half-assed things of looking at it, right? It's not holistic. You know, it's not looking at like, hey, you know, hey, we can come up with these drugs that work really well, but we should also probably remove all the things that are killing us in the first place. Probably the best idea. But hey, I I I don't have the power to get rid of plastics on earth if I did. If I had a magic wand or the the Thanos, you know, stones, I I'd click like this to get rid of all the plastics and uh ultra-processed foods in the worm if I could. But uh unfortunately I don't have the the Thanos uh glove.
SPEAKER_00So we just need to put like it's just putting plasters over things. It's like that problem still exists, but we're just gonna put plasters over it and hope that it goes away.
DaveLet's just let's just put this like like poster over it so you don't see what's underneath it.
SPEAKER_00Uh so yeah, I've just put a hole in the wall, but there's a poster over it, so it's fine, you can't see it.
DaveYeah, yeah. All right.
Quick Wrap And Where To Follow
DaveWell, that was a good podcast, man. I appreciate you joining from Spain. You definitely did more than I did. I I apologize for not being here yesterday with the flight debacles. I was not happy yesterday. So it would have been a very angry podcast if I did it from a care for it.
SPEAKER_00So I bet imagine you were just in uh problem solving mood. It's like, okay, here's the problem. How do I fix it?
DaveYep, 100%. Like literally locked in. What flights can I get? You know, gotta change the rental car drop-off to this location. I I actually gave uh I was moving so fast that I put uh Gavin's birthday as the twins' birthday. So when I got to TSA, they're like, no, you gotta go to the other terminal and fix this real quick. I'm like, son of a gun. Gotta go to a different terminal, get that fixed, get a birthday fixed. It was it was a shit show. But hey, we made it through. And dad led the charge. That's what's most important. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'll be back in normal, uh, normal space next week. And check us out at WeHack Health on all socials and everything in between. Awesome. See everybody. Thanks for tuning in.
unknownBye.
